About Bara Imambara:

One of Lucknow’s most well-known monuments is the Bara Imambara. The Imambara is most famous for its amazing maze, which is situated on the upper level of the monument and is commonly referred to as Bhul Bhulaiya. There are allegedly 1024 ways to enter the maze, but only two ways to exit it.

It is also referred to as Asfi Imambara, after the name of the Lucknowi Nawab who ordered its construction. Muslims gather here annually to celebrate the holy month of Muharram. Reported to be the biggest beam-free structure on Earth, Bara Imambara is a magnificent example of Mughal architecture and an engineering wonder. 

Bara Imambara’s architecture:

The architecture of the Bara Imambara demonstrates a synthesis of Awadhi and Mughal elements. The structure’s exterior is characterized by massive gateways and elegant arches, while its interior is embellished with ornate details, well carved stucco motifs, and intricate calligraphy. The large central hall of the Imambara is said to have been constructed as a means of providing employment for the people during a severe famine.

The complex leaves visitors with a lasting impression of its grandeur, the mysterious Bhul-Bhulaiya, and its serene ambience. The winter months of October through February are the ideal times to visit Bara Imambara in Lucknow.
